The Office of English Language Arts (ELA), as part of the Office of Elementary Education and Reading and the Office of Secondary Education, is responsible for providing support to teachers and schools throughout the state in the implementation of Mississippi’s College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) for English Language Arts. Mississippi literacy standards require explicit, skill-based instruction for reading, speaking, and writing in all subject areas. The College and Career Ready Standards (CCRS) were updated in and are now the focus of Mississippi's literacy curriculum.
Mississippi’s English Learner (EL) population is growing rapidly, with the state now serving more than 12, identified EL students. In response to this growth, as well as requests from districts new to serving EL students, we are launching a series of recorded webinars designed to provide administrators, general education teachers, EL tutors and other educators with information on . Content standards outline the skills and knowledge expected of students from grade to grade and subject to subject. In addition to the Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards, the MDE has developed a wide variety of training materials for educators and administrators across the state, linked below.
The English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards for Adult Education (AE) are intended to address the urgent need for educational equity, access, and rigor for adult English language learners (ELLs). States are adopting challenging academic content standards for adult education with the goal of ensuring. The Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards (MS CCRS) for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (“the Standards”) are the culmination of an extended, broad-based effort to fulfill the charge to create next generation.
